Nigerian Plaintiff Finally Becomes a U.S. Citizen After Joining Federal Lawsuit

After residing in the United States for six years as a lawful permanent resident, a Nigerian mother applied for naturalization in early 2025. She successfully completed her N-400 interview and was scheduled to take her oath in January 2026.

However, her ceremony was abruptly cancelled because of the USCIS pause affecting nationals from certain countries, including Nigeria.

The unexpected delay caused her severe stress and anxiety. Although she already had a green card, she lived in constant fear and uncertainty about her future. She also lost opportunities to apply for certain jobs available only to U.S. citizens and avoided international travel out of concern that complications could arise when returning to the United States.

As a mother, she became concerned about her family’s future and ultimately decided to join our federal lawsuit challenging the adjudication pause.

After the court granted a stay in our lawsuit in April, her case finally moved forward. She received notice of her rescheduled oath ceremony.  Less than three weeks later, in May 2026, she officially took the Oath of Allegiance and became a United States citizen.

Although litigation is still ongoing and many other plaintiffs are waiting for their case to be resolved, this story is a powerful reminder to stand up for one’s rights in the face of injustice.

McBean Law is now onboarding Round 3 of our federal lawsuit challenging the USCIS Adjudication Pause.
