Jamaican Client Released from ICE Detention on Bond in Louisiana

Cases involving criminal charges and immigration detention move quickly and require careful coordination between criminal and immigration counsel.

We were honored to help this family and secure our client’s release.

Her Story

Our client, a young woman from Jamaica, entered the United States lawfully as a visitor and built her life here alongside her family and husband.

She married a U.S. citizen, worked as a personal care aide caring for senior citizens, and became an important part of her community.

Earlier this year in May 2026, everything changed when she was arrested in Mississippi in connection with an alleged shoplifting incident involving merchandise valued at less than $100.

Although the matter was minor and was her first-ever arrest, an ICE detainer was placed on her after she was processed at the local jail.

She was transferred first to an immigration hold facility in Mississippi and then to an ICE detention center in Louisiana on June 2, 2026, and has been detained since then.

Her mother, a lawful permanent resident, and her U.S. citizen husband were devastated and immediately began searching for help.

How We Helped

When the family contacted us, we quickly gathered information about our client’s life in the United States, her immigration history, her marriage, her employment background, and the support system waiting for her at home.

Timing and strategy were critical. Before filing a motion requesting a bond hearing, we coordinated closely with her criminal defense attorney to ensure that the criminal matter was resolved in the manner that would carry the least possible immigration consequences.

We advised that a full dismissal of the criminal charge would place our client in the strongest position before the Immigration Court.

Once proof of the dismissal became available, our team immediately prepared and filed the motion requesting a bond hearing. Her hearing was set for July 9, 2026.

At the hearing, we presented evidence showing that our client was neither a danger to the community nor a flight risk.

We highlighted that this was her first arrest, that the criminal case had been dismissed, and that she had substantial ties to the United States.

We also submitted evidence of her strong support network, including her husband, mother, stepfather, brother, friends, and members of the senior community she had previously served through her work as a personal care aide.

In addition, we explained that her U.S. citizen spouse had already pursued immigration benefits on her behalf and that she had a viable path to obtaining lawful permanent residence.

The Outcome

During the hearing, the Immigration Judge acknowledged the presence and support of our client’s family members, who appeared virtually to stand beside her during one of the most difficult moments of her life.

After considering the evidence, the Judge agreed that our client was not a danger to the community and was not a flight risk.

The Judge granted bond, allowing our client to be released from ICE detention and reunited with her family after weeks in custody.

For this family, the decision meant more than simply leaving detention. It meant returning home to loved ones, regaining hope, and continuing to fight her immigration case from the support and safety of her community rather than from behind detention walls.
